Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 15, 2026
This policy explains how Knowing ("the app", "we", "us"), developed by Essential Dev Team, handles information. It covers the iPhone app and its widget. Cycle, fertility, sexual activity and pregnancy information is among the most sensitive data a person has, and the app is built so that we never receive it.
Information we collect
None. We do not operate a server that receives your data, we do not ask for your name or email, and the app contains no advertising, analytics, crash-reporting or tracking software from us or anyone else. We don't sell, rent or share data, because we don't have it.
Information stored on your iPhone
Everything you enter is stored in the app's private storage on your device, protected by iOS. This includes:
- Daily logs: bleeding and clots, pain and where it is, cervical mucus, mood, symptoms, substances, sexual activity, notes, ovulation and pregnancy test results, partner habits, and blood pressure readings.
- Health profile: goal (trying to conceive, pregnant, tracking, or avoiding pregnancy), cycle and period length, birth year, when you started trying, number of pregnancies and losses, birth control method and when you stopped it, due date from a clinician, and whether you are sexually active.
- Preferences: theme, app icon, and reminder settings.
A small summary (such as cycle day and phase) is saved to a shared container on your iPhone so the Knowing widget can display it. It never leaves the device.
Apple Health
If you allow it, Knowing reads the following from Apple Health: sleeping wrist temperature, heart rate variability, menstrual flow, ovulation test results, sexual activity, cervical mucus quality, and blood pressure. It can also write the menstrual flow and ovulation test results you log back to Apple Health. You choose each type in the iOS permission sheet and can change that at any time in Settings › Health › Data Access & Devices.
Health data is used only to show your cycle and signals inside the app. It is never used for advertising or marketing, never sold, and never sent to us or to any third party. Apple Health data is stored by Apple under Apple's privacy policy.
Camera
When you scan an ovulation or pregnancy test, the image is analyzed in memory on your iPhone to read the test lines. The photo is not saved and is not uploaded; only the result (for example "Positive") is kept in your log. Camera access is requested only when you open the scanner.
Ask (Apple Intelligence)
On iOS 26 devices that support Apple Intelligence, questions you type into Ask are answered by Apple's on-device language model. Your question and the answer are processed on your iPhone and are not sent to us. On devices without Apple Intelligence, Ask shows matching entries from the app's built-in list of sources instead.
iCloud sync (optional, off by default)
If you turn on iCloud sync in Settings › Backup & restore, your daily logs are stored in your own private CloudKit database under your Apple ID, so they can sync to your other iPhones. Only you can access your private database; we cannot read it. Your health profile and preferences are not synced. Turning sync off stops syncing; to remove data already in iCloud, delete it in iPhone Settings › [your name] › iCloud › Manage Storage.
Backups and exports you create
- Backup file: Settings › Backup & restore creates a
.jsonfile of your logs that you save wherever you choose (for example Files or AirDrop). The file is not encrypted, so keep it somewhere private. - Exports: CSV and PDF exports, including the doctor report, are created on your iPhone and shared only through the iOS share sheet to a destination you pick.
- Share window dates: the Partner screen can share your fertile window dates as text, only when you tap Share.
Anything you send this way is handled by the app or person you send it to, under their own privacy practices.
Notifications
Reminders are scheduled locally on your iPhone; no push server is involved. Discreet wording is on by default, so a notification reads, for example, "You have an update in Knowing." rather than naming your period or fertile window. You can change this in Settings › Reminders.
Your iPhone backup
Like most apps, Knowing's data is included in your normal iCloud or computer backup of the iPhone. That backup is controlled by you and Apple.
Purchases
Subscriptions and the lifetime purchase are processed by Apple. We receive no payment details, name or email. Purchase status is checked on your device with Apple's StoreKit.
Network connections
Knowing connects to the internet only for: Apple's App Store (purchases and restores), Apple's iCloud (only if you turn sync on), and links you tap yourself, such as a study's web page or the support email. The app works fully offline otherwise.
Requests from third parties
Because we never receive your cycle, sexual activity or pregnancy information, we have nothing to disclose in response to a subpoena, court order, data broker or anyone else. The data exists only on your devices and in your own iCloud account, if you enabled sync.
Deleting your data
Settings › Delete All Data erases every log, your health profile, reminders and the widget summary from the app. It does not delete data already saved to Apple Health (manage that in the Health app) or to your iCloud (see above), or backup files you exported. Deleting the app also removes its local data.
Children
Knowing is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children, because we do not collect information at all.
Your rights
Under GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, Washington's My Health My Data Act and similar laws, you have rights to access, correct and delete your personal data and to withdraw consent. You can exercise all of them directly in the app and in iOS Settings, since the data is on your devices. We hold no copy to access or delete on your behalf. For any question, contact us below.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted here with a new date. Any change that would introduce data collection would require an app update and an updated App Store privacy label, and would be described here first.
